Scholarship Application FAQ's

When will applicants be notified regarding scholarship awards?

The Alumni Association will begin notifying students during the week of March 10, 2008. All notification will be sent to the e-mail address provided on the application.

Do I have to apply using the interactive form?

We prefer that you use the Adobe form provided, but you may print a blank application and type or legibly write in the required information.  Please note that the “High School Verification” section can be handwritten by your counselor.

Why can’t I save the pdf form and work on it again at a later date?

The free version of Adobe Reader does not allow individuals to save the information they have filled in.  The only option is to print the information once the application is completed.  Purchased Adobe software, such as Adobe Acrobat Professional, does allow the user to save work.  Please check to see what software is on your PC.

Do I have to be related to a University of Arkansas graduate in order to apply?

No, all students who meet the criteria and submit a completed application by the deadline are eligible for the Arkansas Alumni Association Scholarship Review.

I want to apply for the Endowed Scholarship, “Roads” Scholarship and Chapter Scholarships. Are there different applications?

No, you only need to fill out the 2008 Arkansas Alumni Association Scholarship Application to be considered for all Arkansas Alumni Association scholarships.

How do I know if an Alumni Chapter offers a scholarship in my area?

While it can vary from year-to-year depending on funds available, the following chapters typically offer freshman scholarships: in Arkansas - Capital (Pulaski County), Faulkner County, Garland County, Independence County; out-of-state - Atlanta, GA; Central Oklahoma (Oklahoma City area); Carolinas (Charlotte metro area); Chicago, IL; Dallas, TX; East Texas (Tyler/Longview area); Houston, TX; Mid-South (5 counties within AR/MS/TN region); Nashville, TN; San Francisco, CA; St. Louis, MO; Tri-State (6 counties within KS/MO/OK region)

My ACT is above a 24 but due to a strict grading scale at my high school, my GPA is below a 3.60. Can I still apply?

The GPA noted on the transcript, either weighted or non-weighted, will be the GPA used to determine eligibility for the scholarship review.  GPA’s that are figured on a scale other than a 4-point scale will be recalculated by our Scholarship Coordinator.

What are the format requirements for the essay?

Essays are limited to 2 pages or 500 words and must be typed and double-spaced using a minimum 12-point true-type font (Times New Roman, Arial, etc.)

Can I submit a resume in lieu of the forms for honors, leadership, work experience, and volunteer service?

No, you must use the forms provided to list all of your accomplishments.

I need more space than the forms allow. What can I do?

Two pages per form (except for Work Experience) have been included to accommodate extra space you may need.  Please limit your achievements to the space provided and prioritize if needed.

The University of Arkansas already has my transcript. Do I have to send another copy?

Yes, you must send an official copy of your 7th semester transcript along with your application.  The transcript must include semester grades for the first semester of your senior year.

My transcript will not be available by February 1, 2008. What do I do?

Submit an official copy of your most recent transcript along with an official copy of your senior class schedule including any mid-term grades.  Please attach a note to your application explaining that your 7th semester transcript is not yet available.  Mail an official copy of your 7th semester transcript as soon as it becomes available.

I’ve taken coursework at a local community college that does not appear on my high school transcript. Do I need to include an official transcript from the college?

Yes, if you have taken college coursework that does not appear on your high school transcript, please send an official copy of your college transcript with your application.

My references have already written letters for me. Can I use a letter I have on file?

The Arkansas Alumni Association scholarship committee learns a great deal about applicants through their reference letters.  A generic letter stating your honors and involvement will not be scored high during the review.  We ask that you carefully select your references so that they can tell us about you as a person.

I would like to submit more than 2 reference letters. Will all letters be evaluated?

No, only 2 letters will be included with your application for the review.

Do all materials need to be submitted together?

We require that all application materials be submitted in the same envelope, but some high schools do not permit official transcripts to be submitted in this manner.  Official transcripts can be sent directly from the high school to the Arkansas Alumni Association at the mailing address listed on the application.

Does the application have to be received by February 1, 2008?

If you are mailing your application, it must be postmarked by February 1, 2008.  Applications that are hand-delivered to the Janelle Y. Hembree Alumni House must be received on or before February 1, 2008.

Can I overnight mail my application?

Yes, you can express mail your application to our physical address: 491 N. Razorback Road, Fayetteville, AR 72701.

When will I be notified about my application?

The Scholarship Review will take place during the 2nd week of March and applicants will begin to be notified during the week of March 10, 2008.

How will I be notified?

All communication from the Arkansas Alumni Association regarding scholarships will be corresponded via e-mail.  Please be sure to provide a current e-mail address on the application.
